Anti-Asian hate crimes increased by nearly 150% in 2020.

Through the event of covid-19, it has caused asian discrimination and asian hate crimes to skyrocket in incredibly high rates, not only in the United states but even New Zealand. This is backed up by statistics found in NZherald articles where "research surveyed 580 Asian New Zealanders across the country and found almost 44 per cent of them experienced some form of mental distress since level 4 lockdown”.

It has existed for decades.

Discrimination towards asians has existed for years and years. From being stripped away of political rights and power to even being able to find good job opportunities. Many immigrants coming from asia, leave behind all they know and move to a completely new country with the hopes of being able to provide a better life for their family. However, they are often met with discrimination, and now as an implication of COVID-19 are even threatened for being who they are.

TIMELINE

1860 Chinese people first came to this country in the gold rushes.
1879 Chinese were targeted by 55 race-based amendments, including a poll tax that charged Chinese immigrants the equivalent of nearly $20,000 to enter the country.
2015 Only 2.1 percent of leadership positions in the public service are held by people who identify ethnically as Asian, even though Asian people made up 11.8 percent of the total population in the 2013 census.
